About Dog Age Calculation
The old rule of multiplying by 7 has been replaced by more accurate, science-backed formulas. This calculator uses the modern American Kennel Club (AKC) guidelines that account for the rapid development in a dog's first two years and adjust for breed size. The result gives you a better understanding of your dog's biological age and life stage.
Size Matters
Small breeds (under 20 lbs) like Dachshunds and Chihuahuas typically live 12-16 years. Medium breeds (21-50 lbs) like Beagles and Bulldogs average 10-13 years. Large breeds (51-100 lbs) like Labrador Retrievers average 9-12 years. Giant breeds (over 100 lbs) like Great Danes average 7-10 years. This size-adjusted formula reflects these lifespan differences.
