What is an Age Calculator?

An age calculator computes your exact age from your date of birth to the current date. Beyond simply counting years, it provides a precise breakdown in years, months, and days. This tool also shows interesting facts about your birth date, including the total number of days you have lived, the day of the week you were born, your Western zodiac sign, and a countdown showing how many days remain until your next birthday. All calculations happen instantly in your browser.

How Age Calculation Works

The calculator determines your age by computing the difference between your birth date and today. It accounts for varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years. A leap year occurs every 4 years, except for century years not divisible by 400. This means 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. The calculation uses the date-fns library and JavaScript Date objects, which handle these calendar complexities correctly. The result shows complete years first, then remaining months, then remaining days.

Common Use Cases

  • Determining your exact age for official documents and applications
  • Calculating age eligibility for programs, benefits, or milestones
  • Finding out how many days old you are or what day you were born on
  • Counting down to your next birthday
  • Verifying age requirements for legal, medical, or insurance purposes

Age in Different Cultures

Different cultures count age differently. In most Western countries, you are 0 years old at birth and gain a year on each birthday. In the traditional East Asian age reckoning system (used historically in Korea, China, and Japan), a person is 1 year old at birth, and everyone ages one year on the Lunar New Year rather than on their individual birthday. South Korea officially switched to the international age system in 2023. This calculator uses the Western counting method, which is the international standard.
