What is Word to PDF Conversion?

Word to PDF conversion takes a Microsoft Word document (.docx) and converts it into a portable PDF file. PDF is the universal document format that displays identically on every device and operating system, making it the standard for sharing documents professionally. This tool extracts the text content from your Word file and lays it out in a clean, readable PDF with proper line wrapping and page breaks. The entire conversion runs in your browser with no server upload required, keeping your documents private.

How It Works

The tool uses the mammoth.js library to parse the .docx file (which is actually a ZIP archive containing XML files). It extracts the text content and basic structure, including paragraphs and line breaks. An HTML preview is generated for reference. The extracted content is then rendered into a PDF using the pdf-lib library, with proper pagination and text wrapping. While basic document structure is preserved, complex formatting such as tables, embedded images, custom fonts, and advanced styles will not appear in the PDF output. For documents requiring exact formatting fidelity, using Microsoft Word or Google Docs for PDF export is recommended.

Common Use Cases

  • Converting text-heavy documents for sharing without requiring Word
  • Creating PDF versions of essays, letters, and reports
  • Extracting text content from .docx files when Word is not available
  • Quick conversion when exact formatting is less important than content
  • Generating printable PDFs from simple Word documents

Supported Features and Limitations

This tool supports .docx files (Microsoft Word 2007 and later). Older .doc files are not supported; open them in Word or Google Docs and re-save as .docx first. The converter handles paragraphs, line breaks, and basic text content well. However, because the conversion runs entirely in the browser without a full Word rendering engine, features like tables, headers/footers, images, charts, custom fonts, and complex layouts are not reproduced in the PDF. For these documents, export to PDF directly from Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice for the best results.

For converting images to PDF, use JPG to PDF. To extract text from an existing PDF, try PDF to Text. For combining multiple PDFs, see Merge PDF.
