What is PDF Rotation?

PDF rotation adjusts the orientation of pages in a PDF document by changing the page rotation metadata. This is commonly needed when scanned documents are fed sideways into a scanner, when photos embedded in PDFs appear rotated, or when you need to switch between portrait and landscape orientation for printing. This tool applies your chosen rotation angle to all pages and produces a new PDF. All processing happens in your browser for complete privacy.

How It Works

PDF pages store a rotation property that tells the viewer how to display the content. This tool modifies that rotation value by adding 90 degrees (clockwise), 180 degrees (upside down), or 270 degrees (counter-clockwise) to each page's existing rotation. Because this changes metadata rather than re-rendering the content, the operation is fast and lossless. No pixels are resampled, no text is re-rasterized, and no image quality is lost. The resulting PDF is identical to the original except for the rotation values.

Common Use Cases

  • Fixing scanned documents that were fed sideways or upside down
  • Correcting landscape pages in a portrait document
  • Preparing documents for proper printing orientation
  • Adjusting photos or diagrams embedded in PDFs
  • Rotating architectural drawings or wide spreadsheet exports

Portrait vs Landscape Orientation

Portrait orientation is taller than it is wide (like a standard letter or A4 page). Landscape orientation is wider than it is tall (like a widescreen display). Rotating a portrait page 90 degrees converts it to landscape, and vice versa. Some PDF viewers can temporarily rotate pages for viewing, but this does not modify the file itself. This tool permanently changes the rotation so the corrected orientation persists when the file is shared, printed, or opened in any viewer.
