Understanding Running Pace
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance, typically expressed as minutes per kilometre (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi). It is the primary metric used by runners to plan training sessions, set race goals, and track improvements over time. A GPS watch or running app typically displays pace in real time, allowing you to hold a consistent effort throughout a run.
Pace and speed are two ways of describing the same thing. If your pace is 5:00 min/km, your speed is 12 km/h. Runners tend to prefer pace because it directly answers the question "how long will this run take?" without needing to do mental arithmetic.

Training Pace Zones
Effective training uses multiple pace zones rather than always running at the same speed. Easy runs (about 60-70% of maximum heart rate) build aerobic base and should make up the majority of your weekly mileage. Tempo runs at a comfortably hard effort improve your lactate threshold. Interval sessions at 5K pace or faster build speed and running economy. Most training plans follow an 80/20 rule: 80% easy, 20% moderate to hard.
