Understanding Dice and Probability
Dice have been used for thousands of years in games and random selection. Modern tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons use a set of polyhedral dice with varying numbers of sides. The standard set includes d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20, each providing a uniform probability distribution.
For a single die with N sides, each face has a probability of 1/N. The expected value (average roll) is (N+1)/2. For example, a d6 has an expected value of 3.5, and a d20 has an expected value of 10.5.
When rolling multiple dice, the results follow a probability distribution that approaches a bell curve (normal distribution) as more dice are added. The expected total for rolling K dice of N sides is K * (N+1) / 2. The most likely total is always this expected value, with extreme totals being progressively less likely.
